Tagai

NOT SUBBED

When Tagai appears in the sky with his brother Kang and their nine crew, Islanders know it’s the right time to take a trip. Tagai is a skilled fisherman and from the island of Mabiuag in the Torres Strait. He and his brother are both Zugubal, spiritual beings that looked like humans. When he and his brother Kang die they become stars in the sky, joining his nine crew who became navigating stars, already in the sky. Their canoe also followed them up into the stars. Tagai is known as the rain maker bringing winds and storm and always comes up in October warning the people there will be big rain soon. He goes down for a short time only to return in November, bringing the big and heavy rains. Tagai also helps fishermen to navigate — coming up to let Islanders know to be ready to navigate or take a trip, otherwise they will have to wait for up to a month. Kek is the signal star coming out over Tikki, (Mount Augustus, St Pauls Island) When Kek (Achernar star) rises in October, he bring with him the harvesting rains and winds for farms. He is also the initiation star signalling it’s the month to hold initiations. He goes down in November as the red planet Duaga (Marse) rises. Tagai and Kang are representation of the two currents in the Torres Strait, the easterly westerly and the southerly. Kang, the eldest brother, has weak eyes and good hearing and he runs with the wind. And Tagai, is stronger and has good eyes and bad hearing runs against the wind. The tide that runs against the wind is called getath, and the one that runs with the wind is kulis.
