People abandon Ngarrabullgan

The Kuku Djungan people stop camping on Ngarrabullgan, a sacred and dangerous table top mountain, where they’ve been living for more than 37,000 years.

Located in what will become Far North Queensland, Ngarrabullgan** **is inhabited by the malicious Eekoo spirit.

He can cause sickness by throwing hooks, stones, or pieces of wood into a person’s body without leaving a mark.

The Kuku Djungan approach the mountain with caution and avoid Lake Koongarra, the water at the top of the mountain, where the Eekoo lives.

FACT BOX Archeological evidence suggests people began living on Ngarrabullgan at least 37,000 years ago, but stopped camping on it about 600 years ago.

Its striking sandstone escarpment is 18km long and ten times the size of Uluru.

Djungan means people of the rock.
