Moon lagoon

For the Gugu Badhun people on the north-east of the continent, the moon is an important part of life and they observe its relationship with the water.

One lagoon on Gugu Badhun country is named after the moon.

Balanu (moon) waterhole is dry most of the year, until there is a full moon.

The moon affects the tide, where gravitational pull brings water up to the surface.

When this happens, a spring opens to the Balanu waterhole and runs for about three months, filling it up before disappearing again.

This story has been handed down over thousands of years showing a stable society with complex social systems and law.

Balanu waterhole is in the vicinity of the Kinrara crater and is connected to the lava flow system.

Many of the rocks and waterholes on Gugu Badhun country are connected.
