Mining and medicine

Yindjibarni people are using a technique to separate edible seeds from dirt and other materials, in what will become known as the Pilbara region in Western Australia,

This process is known as 'yanding', derived from the Yindjibarni word, yandy.

A yandy is a wooden container that the seeds are placed in.

Firstly, the seeds are crushed to try and separate them from their pods.

Then they are shaken back and forth in the yandy to get rid of any pod fragments.

After this the seeds are baked in hot sand and ashes before going through an additional yandying process.

Once baked, the seed can be ground into a paste.
