Great Barrier Reef watercraft

In Darumbal sea country people use sophisticated watercraft technology and navigation abilities to voyage across open sea to islands located over 25kms off the coast, in what's now known as the Great Barrier Reef.

People source logs from pine trees, palm trees, bark, gum trees, hoop pines and tea trees to make canoes.

Three pieces of large bark are stitched together with roots to make the bottom and two sides of the two-man canoe, measuring up to three or four metres long and about a metre wide.

The sails are made from bark.

These canoes are used for fishing, hunting and travelling, up the river and between the islands and mainland.

One person uses a shell to bail it out while the other rows with a stick.

Watercraft are made differently depending on the area's conditions, like winds and tides.
