Glaciers in Tasmania

Down south, people are living in valleys below alpine glaciers.

Glacial ice covers about 10 per cent of lutruwita (Tasmania).

To survive thousands of years of freezing conditions, generations of people here in the south-west have lived in caves, lighting fires on the valley grasslands to make it easy to hunt wombats and wallabies.

Thousands of years later, as the planet warms, the warmer and wetter conditions and return of dense forest drive people out of this area.
