Gippsland seas

On the Bass Strait in Gippsland, eastern Victoria, dry land suddenly becomes the ocean when the sea rushes in, forming a huge inland waterway.

The Gunaikurnai people say it happened because Mungan Ngour, a god in the sky, their father, creator and creator of rules and laws, was angry with them.

The water rushes in quickly and forms waterways called Talicoture, which means ‘little flood’/’great flood’?, and will become known as The Gippsland Lakes.

It’s found that children are playing with a men’s bull-roarer, an instrument that should  only be used in initiation ceremonies.

They show it to the women, which is forbidden under law, and Mungan Ngour becomes angry.

The water rises rapidly and people drown.

It happens around the same time as the sky lights up with Aurora Australis/Australis Borealis, which some people say is Mungan Ngour sending fire to Port Albert from Coonawarra.

There’s panic in the community.

People become frightened about the environmental events and tribes begin fighting and killing each other.
