Fishing techniques

NOT SUBBED/CONSULTATION TBC In areas along rivers and creek systems, such as Maningrida in the Northern Territory, people are using basket fish traps.

The fish traps, called an-gujechiya, are so special they are also a totem.

The hand-held nets are made of woven jungle vines and can be around 1.5 metres or more in length.

The intricate weaving technique used to make the nets requires strength, skill, and patience.

The tough vines are configured to create a long cylinder shape that must be woven very tightly, so it becomes sturdy enough to hold schools of fish inside.
