Fire stick farming

Aboriginal people are using fire to carefully and sustainably manage the land and increase its bounty for harvesting.

Fire stick farming is being used around Australia as a sophisticated tool to create the right resources in the right places, ensuring food supply throughout the year even in the harshest of conditions.

Across Gunditjmara country in western Victoria, fire patterns are used by Gunditjmara people to enable hunting across seasons, creating fresh grass regrowth to lure animals.

The burning improves safety by reducing fuel, but also makes the puunyaart grass grow back more pliable, making it easier to weave baskets.
