Budj Bim eel traps

Gunditjmara people at Tae Rak (Lake Condah) in Victoria’s south-west are trapping and farming eels using complex hydraulic systems built out of volcanic rocks around the lake.

A form of aquaculture, it means they can feed hundreds of people with farmed fish.

The design also channels eels into natural recessions once flood waters recede, creating growing ponds and habitats that are available any time of the year.

This means they’re not just creating traps, but actually farming eels.
