Bonyi Bonyi (Bunya gathering)

Approximately every three years,  coinciding with the harvest of bumper Bunya nut crops, thousands from many tribes converge on Bonyi Biar (Bunya Mountains).

Travelling from hundreds of kilometres away in all directions, they use star maps, songlines and waterways to navigate their journey.

At the highly significant gathering, groups from what will become New South Wales and Queensland build and maintain alliances, law, marriage connections and resolve disputes.

They share and trade resources, knowledge, songs and dances.

Ceremonies are held and cultural, social and kinship obligations and values are observed.

It is held in the summer, when the bunya trees are in season.

They produce giant cones, weighing up to 10 kilograms, each containing up to 100 edible nuts.
